Memories of Deepavli Past

My brand new clothes that I will wear tomorrow sit neatly in a box in front of the altar (the mantapa) in the prayer room, as do my brother’s and my parents’. The heady aroma of our favorite sweets that mom has made, Mysore Pak, Coconut Barfi, Besan Unde, has been taunting us all day long. The prayer room has been cleaned, the idols washed and the pooja (ritual) items readied for prayers tomorrow. Fresh flowers, coconuts and betel leaves are arranged neatly in two or three plates for the prayers and to give away to guests that will arrive all day long the next day. More >

NEERUNDU NILAMUNDU

NEERUNDU NILAMUNDU a film by Bala Kailasam

The word ‘reforms’ with respect to Government functioning is almost always understood only in its economic context as disinvestment and privatization. Very rarely it is understood as the reform of the functioning of the individuals within the Government, and a change in the form and style of Governance. It is taken for granted that such a mission is impossible!

Expat in Bangalore

I found this interesting blog on pervez.blogspot.com about an American living in Bangalore. I thought all of you would enjoy it too:

I spent a couple of days last week in Delhi attending the TiECon – the annual TiE summit for the Delhi chapter. For those who are not familiar with this organization, TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) is the largest organization of its kind with a mission to grow and foster entrepreneurship. It was an exciting and intellectually stimulating event. Speakers at the conference included India’s home minister, Chidambaram, UK Consul General Richard Staggs, CEO of GenPact Pramod Bhasin and many others. There were nearly a thousand delegates including potential and successful entrepreneurs, investors, students and media.

It was heartening to see so many young and budding entrepreneurs with great ideas for solving real world problems, creating wealth and changing the world. There was unbounded excitement even in these tough economic times. In fact, the general theme at the conference was starting and running new ventures during difficult times. The current global crisis has not dampened the enthusiasm of these young business professionals in this part of the world. On the contrary, it is giving birth to smarter startups that will learn resilience and tenacity and some may grow up to be the next HP or Google. More >

Bangalore will soon have zero-garbage zones

Bangalore: Very soon, the entire stretch from Mayo Hall till the BBMP head office near Hudson Circle will be a Zero Garbage Zone.
After the pilot project in Gandhinagar still waiting to be officially unveiled by the chief minister, this BBMP plan now goes east. Similar initiatives are being prepared for areas like Sanjaynagar and Jeevan Bima Nagar.
While the plan (see box) and areas seem to be clear, the cost factor and sustainability in the long run are rather challenging, considering there’ve been similar efforts earlier. A few like the ‘litter cop policy’ never took off. “We’ll still give it another try though it’s too early to unveil further plans,’’ BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena. More >
